Be part of design.

The
Center for Architecture & Design is a communal space that functions as a nexus of education and outreach for design and architecture in Baltimore. I led the creation of their messaging, visual identity system, collateral, and environmental graphics.

Echoing a similar vision and purpose as its sister organizations — the Baltimore chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Baltimore Architecture Foundation (BAF) — The Center’s brand is hinged upon a simple notion: that all participants, partners, and donors of the space can be part of something larger within its walls and beyond. Whether individuals seek education, community, dialogues, or inspiration within the sphere of design and architecture, it can be found at The Center.

Located within one of two buildings in Baltimore designed by the esteemed architect Mies van der Rohe — One Charles Center —  the visual identity is informed by its own architectural structure. Following the geometric pattern of the building’s exterior window grid, the identity utilizes condensed typography and generous letterspacing to create a column of 9 letters that comprise the name — a visual motif that would be consistently enforced across other messaging applications.
The phrase “Be part of” functions as a prefix to a variety of keywords integral to their cause, culminating in a series of inspirational mantras that not only illuminate the organization’s purpose, but appeal to a wide array of diverse sentiments and interests beyond aesthetic principles.
Informed by the sophistication of Modernism, International Style, and the Bauhaus, the brand colors pay homage to the past of design and architecture, while simultaneously looking towards the future with a vibrant and energetic voice. A loose system was prescribed to each supplemental color, enabling The Center to demarcate different themes, topics, or events with each distinct hue.
We also designed the microsite for one of The Center’s forthcoming campaigns: The Center Fund. It not only captures the essence of the original site’s aesthetic integrity, but has been laid out intentionally as a template to be replicated for future campaigns or events.

Additionally, we created the environmental graphics for the exterior windows of the space. These window graphics reinforce the central location of The Center, providing administrative and program space for seven different organizations.  Their bold, yellow appearance helps them stand out, even from afar.
